BILLINGS, Montana – The 11th-ranked Carroll College women's basketball overcame a 16 point deficit to tie the game but couldn't take a lead late and Rocky Mountain held on for a 62-61 win over the No. 11 Saints Thursday night in Billings.
The Saints struggled out of the gate, allowing the Bears to build a 7-2 lead. Carroll answered and took a 10-9 lead with 4:40 left in the first quarter before the Bears closed the frame with an 11-4 run.
Rocky continued the big run and built a 37-21 lead with 1:25 to play in the second quarter before the Saints closed on a five-point run to cut the lead to 37-26 at the half.
Carroll dominated the third quarter, leaning on posts
Baylee Watson and
Cassidy Hashley. Watson tallied six points and Hashley had nine in the third to tie the game at 52 at the end of the quarter.
Rocky opened the fourth quarter on a 6-0 run. The Saints closed the lead to 62-61 but couldn't get a shot off in the final seconds and fell for just the fourth time this season.
Hashley led the Saints with 20 points,
Katie Estey tallied 19 and Watson tallied 12 points and a team-high nine rebounds.
The Saints and Bears were both 23 of 60 (38.3 percent) from the field and the Saints outrebounded Rocky 41-38. Carroll tallied 12 turnovers to Rocky's 10. The Bears were 10 of 15 (66 percent) from the free throw line to the Saints 8 of 13 (61.5 percent).
The game was the lone contest of the week for Carroll. They host Montana Tech on Feb. 11 in their next Frontier Conference action.
