Carroll moves to 4-2 after two wins in final day of SoCal Classic

WEST COVINA, Calif. – Carroll College softball's bats came alive with good pitching to clinch two victories over Antelope Valley (5-3) and Embry-Riddle (8-0) at the final day of the SoCal Classic in West Covina, California.

The Saints fell behind 1-0 after a groundout RBI by Antelope Valley in the top of the first inning, but Allison Bayer answered back with a solo home run to left field to knot the game at 1-1 after the first.

Paige Blake would get a lead off walk in the third and Carroll took the lead when a Courtney Cloud bunt single that was mishandled. The throwing error led to a pair of runs when cloud and Blake scored to give the Saints a 3-1 lead.  Jadeen Sakauye's two out single to center drove in Tianna Harper later in the inning for a 4-1 lead after three.

Antelope Valley cut the lead to 4-2 with a run in the fifth inning but the Saints responded with a run in the sixth.  Tess Eaton hit an RBI single to right field in the sixth inning, scoring pinch runner Brittney Smith, and it proved to be enough as the Saints won 5-3.

Ashley Davis started the game in the circle for the Saints, going three innings and only allowed one unearned run on three hits.  Eaton picked up her first win after throwing four innings and allowing two runs on five hits.

"We talked about rebounding and finishing and that's exactly what we did today." said head coach Aaron Jackson.

Carroll dominated the second game against Embry-Riddle with offense and solid pitching performances.

Harper started the five run second inning off with a solo home run.  Blake added two more runs with a single to right field scoring Taylor Ostwald and Jaylin Kenney.  Brittney Hogan's two RBI double finished up the inning, giving Carroll a 5-0 early lead.

The Saints tacked on two more runs in the third inning after a single to second base by Blake, scoring Otswald and Kenney.  An Otswald RBI single to center field in the fourth inning increased the lead to 8-0 and Carroll would hold hon for the run rule win.

MacKenna Landis earned the win after pitching three innings, allowing two hits and striking out three.  Megan Gipe came pitched in relief for the final two innings, giving up no hits.

Blake finished the day with four hits, one walk and three RBIs.  Kenney went 3-3 with two runs in the second game and Kaydee Parsons went 2-3 against Antelope Valley.

"We controlled the game from the beginning with our offense." Jackson said.  "This weekend was about learning and gaining confidence that our system will work."

Carroll's next game is a double header on the road against Benedictine University at Mesa on Feb 26th at 11 a.m.  The Redhawks are 0-6 on the season after losing to Pacific Lutheran University and Arizona Christian University.
