HELENA, Mont. – Montana Western's Kaye Bignell hit a contested shot with 6.3 seconds on the clock to give the Bulldogs a 65-64 win over Carroll College Wednesday evening at the PE Center in Helena.
The bucket was a culmination of a back and forth affair that saw both teams lead in the final seconds but in the end it was Western who made the final shot.
UMW built an 11-6 lead in the first quarter before the Saints cut it to 18-17 at the first quarter break.
The Saints started the second quarter with a 7-1 run and built a 36-27 lead with 2:34 left in the first half.
Montana Western closed the half with a 7-0 run to cut the lead to 36-34 at the break.
The Bulldogs started the second half on an 8-2 run and built a 51-45 lead at the end of the third.
A Bignell bucket with 5:23 left gave Western a 59-50 lead but the Saints began to chip away.
With under a minute to play Carroll went on a 5-0 run and took a 64-63 lead on a baseline 3-pointer from
Baylee Watson with 22 seconds left but Bignell answered on the other end and the Saints couldn't get off a clean look giving Western the 1-point win.
The Saints were led by
Bailey Pasta with 20 points. Watson scored 12 and
Cassidy Hashley had her sixth double-double of the year with 10 points and 12 rebounds.
Aniese Palmore led Western with 20 points Britt Cooper scored 11 and Bignell had 10.
The Saints next play on Dec. 19 against Pacific University in Helena.
