KIRKLAND, Wash. – Carroll College men's soccer scored two second half goals and overcame tough weather to earn a 3-2 road win over Northwest University Saturday in Kirkland.
The Eagles opened the scoring in the ninth minute of the match with an own goal. A Northwest cross was deflected into the goal by a Carroll defender putting the Saints in an early hole.
Carroll answered with just 38 seconds left in the half.
Sam Malouf knocked in the ball from six-yards out to equalize 1-1.
Just 30 seconds later, and eight seconds before the half, a foul just outside the Carroll box gave the Eagles a great free-kick opportunity and they capitalized with Branson Corwin scoring to again regain the lead.
Northwest outshot Carroll 10-6 in the first half but the second would be all Fighting Saints.
Jacob Groh tied the game at 2-2 in the 62nd minute with volleyed goal on a corner kick from Kyle Thompson.
In the 73rd minute, Carroll took the lead when
Jose Porras scored to take the lead.
Riley Prescott knocked a free kick into Porras who finished from five-yards out giving Carroll the lead.
Two Northwest players would earn red cards in the final minutes and the Saints would control possession to kill the clock and move to 7-7 on the season and 5-4 in Cascade play.
Carroll outshot the Eagles 13-9 after the break, including a 9-1 advantage in shots on goal.
"It was a gut check," head coach
Doug Mello said. "We were down 2-1 but after an average first half they took the action to them and earned the win. This is a good win and a confidence builder as we head towards the final stretch of the season."
Carroll sits in a tie for seventh-place in the conference standings with four games left on the slate. The Saints play all four at home beginning with Oregon Tech Thursday at Nelson Stadium.
