Saints Top Rocky Mountain 3-0 in Billings

BILLINGS, Mont. –  The Carroll College volleyball team earned its third consecutive sweep Saturday afternoon, this win coming over reigning Frontier Tournament champions Rocky Mountain 25-22, 25-15, 25-20 at the Fortin Center in Billings.

The Saints moved to 4-1 in Frontier play maintaining sole possession of first place after the Bears took down Montana Western Friday.

"Any time you play at Rocky it is tough, they know how to win and they've done it for a long time," head coach Moe Boyle said. "I think that we came to play today. The senior leadership led the way and we looked like a seasoned group even though we are playing with a lot of freshman and sophomores."

Carroll tallied a team .279 hitting percentage while holding the Bears to .216. Holly Morehouse had a team-high 13 kills with a just two errors for a .407 hitting percentage. Paige Montgomery notched 11 kills and the two starting middle hitters, Mallory Arbizanni and Brielle Bumgarner had 10 kills each.

Jonni Dorr had 40 assists and 11 digs. Natalie Kassa had 18 digs to lead the Saints and Ayla Carpenter and Catherine Sloan each had 12.

The Saints tallied half of their 14 hitting errors in the first set but were able to squeak out a 25-22 win.

"We started off a little rough but we settled in," head coach Moe Boyle said. "We continued playing the way that we can play. I would still like to limit our errors, but I thought when we needed to we did what we had to do with the ball."

Carroll dominated the second set, limiting the Bears to just seven Kills while notching 21 of their own. The Saints had a .360 hitting percentage while Rocky hit just .162.

"Our back line played very well and dug a lot of ball," Boyle said. "Rocky was hitting the ball hard and didn't make a lot of errors but we were getting up everything they threw at us. Holly Morehouse played well offensively but she was also very good on the block which had a big impact on the way they hit the ball."

The Saints took the third and final set 25-20 to earn the sweep. Carroll moves to 15-4 on the season and 4-1 in Frontier Conference play. Carroll next plays Montana Western on Oct. 7 at the PE Center.
