HELANA, Mont. – The Carroll College volleyball team travels to Southern California for four tough matches at The Master's Tournament in Santa Clarita, Calif., on Friday and Saturday.
The field includes No. 2 Biola, a 2014 NAIA tournament team in Cal State San Marco and The Master's who received votes in the preseason poll.
The Saints (3-2) now have five matches under their belts and head coach Moe Boyle used this week's practice to focus on improving the young Carroll squad instead of worrying about the teams that they face in Friday and Saturday.
"One of the things that we've focused on this week is our production and not on what the other team is doing," Boyle said. "It is important that we build comfort on the court with the players that we are going to be there. We need to improve at the positions that we are going to play, especially the freshmen."
The Saints open the tournament Friday at 1 p.m. against Biola. The Eagles are 5-0 on the season and all wins came in their own tournament, including three wins over top-15 teams.
Carroll follows that game up with a 7 p.m. game against Westmont. The Warriors are 4-2 on the season and earned a win over No. 14 College of Idaho.
Saturday, the Saints play back-to-back matches beginning with the Master's at 1 p.m. and immediately followed by the CSU-San Marcus.
The Mustangs are hard to evaluate, they have won each of the three matches they've played against top-25 teams while winning only one of six matches against unranked teams.
CSU-San Marcos is in their first year as an NCAA DII team and has yet to play a match.
Carroll is still working out the lineup, which is an important aspect of the early season tournaments.
"The rotation is a little more settled this week but in no way is it close to finished," Boyle said. "The opportunity for the players who didn't see the court a whole lot last week is still there and the girls that started are feeling the pressure too. We have to make progress and this is a great opportunity for us to be better."
Boyle looks at this week as an opportunity to make it over the hump and become a team that can threaten for the Frontier title.
"Our confidence lags a little simply because we haven't won a game against a high ranked team," Boyle said. "We have the goal to win the conference and we have to be better individuals to be a better team. We have to concentrate on doing our job so the team can grow."
