NAMPA, Idaho – The Carroll College softball team fell to Eastern Oregon 8-7 (9 innings) and NCAA DII Northwest Nazarene 11-1 (5 innings) in the second day of the College of Idaho/Northwest Nazarene Softball Classic.
The Saints began the day with an extra-inning battle against Eastern Oregon. Carroll scored in the top of the first on a bases-loaded line-out by
Kinley Pope that drove in
Paige Blake.
EOU answered with two runs in the bottom of the first and added another run in the third inning to take a 3-1 advantage.
In the top of the fourth
Maddie Jones hit a solo home run to center field to cut the lead to 3-2. The Mountaineers answered with a run in the bottom of the fourth to extend the lead to 4-2.
The Saints cut the lead to 4-3 in the top of the fifth when Jones drove in
Allison Bayer on a sac-fly.
Neither team scored in the sixth inning but the Saints tied the game when Jones singled up the middle to drive in
Justine Taylor.
EOU couldn't respond in the top of the seventh which forced an eighth inning.
During college tournament play a runner is placed on second base to begin extra innings.
Haley Adams was placed on second and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by
Megan Gipe. She scored on a single up the middle by Blake.
Two batters later,
Allison Bayer singled to right center to score Blake.
EOU tallied two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to again tie the game up and force a ninth inning.
The Saints took the lead when
Kathryn Zink scored on a single by
Jaylin Kenney but the one-run lead wouldn't be enough. The Saints gave up two runs in the top of the ninth and fell on a walk-off fielder's choice.
MacKenna Landis and Gipe combined to allow 13 hits, and six earned runs while walking seven and stiking out two.
Jones had a team-high three RBIs. Four saints had multiple hits led bu Bayer and
Jasyn Mulcahy with three apiece.
The Saints closed out the day with an 11-1 loss against tournament host Northwest Nazarene. NNU scored four runs in the first inning and one in the second to build a 5-0 lead.
Carroll answered with a run in the third inning when Bayer singled to shortstop to drive in Blake but six runs from the Crusaders in the sixth killed the chances for the Saints.
Neither team scored in the fifth but the damage had been done and the Saints fell 11-1 on the run rule.
Carroll plays against No. 15 Concordia (Ore.) and No. 21 College of Idaho tomorrow. First pitch for Carroll against Concordia comes at noon and the Saints meet the Yotes at 2 p.m.
