SPOKANE – Gonzaga outscored Carroll College 22-0 in the first quarter en route to a 64-31 win in exhibition action at the McCarthey Athletic Center in Spokane Friday night.
The Bulldogs scored on their first three possessions to build a 7-0 lead just 1:38 seconds into the game. Carroll struggled to compete with the size of the Gonzaga team with two 6-5 players but managed to make big strides in the final three quarters.
The Saints again proved that they will be a hard to team to score against, meeting one of the teams goals for the game of holding GU under 65 points.
"Obviously after the first quarter we played much better, we couldn't get anything to fall and they were hitting everything early," head coach
Rachelle Sayers said. "Overall I am really excited for the way we played, holding a team that received votes in the NCAA Poll to fewer than 65 points is a pretty big accomplishment."
The Saints were outrebounded 42-25 but forced 17 turnovers on the game. The Saints also played everyone that made the trip to Spokane with just three players playing over 20 minutes.
"Other than the first quarter jitters I am really excited about what we did," Sayers said. "They played their starters most of the game. They pressed us and the crowd was huge for them, they had over 4,000 people at the game. We got some big performances out of our freshmen and despite the rebounding margin I thought we did a lot of great things on the boards. They are just really big but I feel like this game gives us a lot of confidence moving forward. We weren't intimidated and that is awesome to see."
Brooke Jones led the Saints with seven points while
Hannah Dean had six points and seven rebounds.
Katie Estey and
Baylee Watson also had six points each.
Gonzaga was led by Zhane Templeton with 13 points and Missoula Big Sky product Elle Tinkle with 10.
The Saints next travel to Las Vegas for the Frontier Conference shootout Nov. 13-15 where they will face The Master's, Menlo College and Westmont College.
