PHOENIX – Three Saints scored in double figures and the Saints held Northern New Mexico to just 49 to move to 9-0 on the season with a 57-49 neutral site win.
Jordan Johnston scored in double figures for the fourth time in five games, pacing the Saints with 16 points and
Cassidy Hashley and
Baylee Watson tallied 10 each. Hashley led the Saints with a game-high nine rebounds and Johntson added eight.
Carroll battled to a 6-6 tie with 3:27 left in the first quarter before closing out the frame with an 8-0 run to take a 14-6 lead.
The Eagles began the second quarter on an 11-2 run to take a 17-16 lead but the Saints closed the half on an 11-2 run of their own to take a 27-19 lead into the break.
The Saints extended their lead to 43-32 at the end of the third quarter but the Eagles cut the lead to 51-47 with 5:26 left in the game before closing on a 6-2 run to earn the 57-49 win.
The win was not the cleanest of the 9-0 start for the Saints, maybe a product of a third consecutive weekend on the road for the Saints, but the young squad persevered.
"It was a tough battle. It wasn't pretty, it wasn't very Saint-like basketball but our kids just gutted one out," head coach
Rachelle Sayers said. "
Jordan Johnston had another great game. She made big plays all night.
Baylee Watson had another solid performance for us and
Katie Estey just does it all for us. Gets us into offense, keeps us poised and just doesn't turn it over. We traveled all day yesterday and finally got to the hotel at 12:30am, but this group just battles. We have one more to go to close out this preseason and I expect a great performance from them."
The Saints close out the weekend with a tough battle against Arizona Christian who has moved to 5-3 on the season with a 79-49 over Sul Ross State University Friday.
The Firestorm boast a trio of NCAA DI transfers and freshman guard Courtney Christmas who leads the team with 17 points per game.
The game is slated for 4 p.m.
