HELENA, Mont. – The Carroll College women's soccer team tallied two goals early in the second half and held Evergreen State to just two shots, en route to a 2-0 shutout over the Geoducks Friday on the pitch at Nelson Stadium.
The Saints and Geoducks battled to a scoreless draw in the first half but the Saints outshot Evergreen 8-0 including seven shots on goal.
"I think often, when you play on the road, your mindset's always going to be a little more defense," head coach David Thorvilson said. "It took us a while to where we could find the open gaps and where those passes were going to be. In the second half we cleaned it up and caused more problems for them."
The Saints finally got going in just the first minute of the second half.
Cassidy Hammons took a corner kick for the Saints and the Geoducks left
Ylena Gazdik unmarked. She came up to receive the short corner and as four Evergreen players closed on her, she sent the ball over the top and into the right top corner of the goal.
Just ten minutes later the Saints added some insurance when
Lexi Pyette intercepted an Evergreen pass and then drove past the keeper and buried the ball in the open goal.
"That is a typical goal for Lexi," Thorvilson said. "She has good work ethic and her drive puts her into position to make plays. She picked the ball off the pass and the keeper made the play but she didn't give up on the play she just plain beat the goal keeper."
The Saints ended the game with a 14-2 advantage in shots on goal and a 9-0 advantage in corner kicks.
The shutout was the eighth of the Season for the Saints who have allowed just three goals in Cascade Conference play. The Saints close out the home schedule against Northwest University tomorrow at Nelson Stadium. It is the last home game for 10 Carroll seniors.
"It's the last weekend and you always want do well at home. But it's also Senior Weekend, and a chance to thank 10 seniors for four years of hard work," Thorvilson said. "And being our last regular-season home match, obviously we want the win, but we also want to play well and thank them for everything they've given us over the last four years."
The Eagles were picked to win the conference and is coming off a 1-1 draw against the University of Great Falls.
The match is slated for 1:30 p.m. with senior day activities beginning at 1:15 p.m.
