Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Saints men's season ends in OT

BILLINGS, Mont. – The first season in Carroll College men's soccer history ended Thursday when the Saints lost an overtime match to Rocky Mountain 3-2 in the NAIA Unaffiliated tournament in Billings.

The match was a back and forth battle with teams trading goals before the dramatic end.

Rocky Mountain got on the board very early in the match with a goal with in the seventh minute on a goal by Zach Wall.

That would be the only goal in the first half although the Bears outshot Carroll 8-1. Carroll started pushing the ball forward late in the first half but it didn't result in any shots for the Saints.

"We gave up a lot of early goals and that hurt us in a lot of games including today," head coach Doug Mello said. "After that first goal we played a really great first half."

The Saints got their first shot in the second half just 27 seconds in and Arturo Valle got Carroll on the board in the 57th minute.

The Bears regained the lead in the 76th minute with a goal by Jack Clancy.  Rocky Mountain kept up the pressure and looked to be in control but a handball in the box gave Valle a chance to tie the game at 88th minute with a penalty kick.

Valle came through to send the game into overtime.

In the sixth minute of overtime, Carroll is called for a handball of their own in the box setting up a Rocky Mountain PK. The ball went off of the fingertips of Conor Smith to give Rocky the win.

The Saints finished the inaugural season 6-11-1. Mello has mixed feelings about the end of the first-ever season for Carroll men's soccer.

"I am satisfied with the first season and what we did with just a few months to build a team than what I thought we would do in a lot of ways," Mello said. "On the other side I am disappointed. We have a lot to learn and will get better with more maturity and experience."

Mello is ultimately disappointed with how the season ended.

"The boys played really hard," Mello said "We raised our level and fought through some adversity this season. We deserved better than this finish."
