Dickinson, N.D. - Saints Track & Field finished Day 1 of the Frontier Conference Championships in 1st for the men and 2nd for the women.
Carroll leads Dickinson State 70.5 to 67 with Montana Tech in 3rd for the men. The women trail Dakota State 68 to 54 and lead Dickinson by just 3 points. Eight events of 22 have been included in the meet with a big day of running event finals on Sunday. Winds persisted for much of the meet near 20 miles per hour with up to 30 mile per hour gusts, and similar conditions are expected on Day 2.
To start off the Saturday in the 10,000m, Carroll placed three women in scoring position with Ryah O'Dell an All-Conference selection in 3rd, Nikki Nau in 6th, and Jayna Boonstra in 7th. On the men's side, Zack Gacnik placed 6th in his first 10,000m of the year and Conrad Schruth placed 7th.
Both women and men contested Javelin on Saturday with Katelyn Christensen placing 3rd for All-Conference and Reuben Hornby earning a 4th straight Frontier Conference Championship. Christensen also placed 8th in the 400m Final. In other throwing events, Christian Wolfe set yet another personal record in the Hammer Throw.
It was a strong day in the short sprint prelims with Carroll competitors making the final in the 110m Hurdles (Carson Krack, Jackson Swanz), 100m Hurdles (Claire Bucklin, Gabby Domenici), and 100m (Brynn Wandle). Krack also placed 3rd in the 400m and won the Frontier Conference Championship in the Long Jump making it another stellar day for him. Both Bucklin (6th) and Domenici (8th) scored in the Long Jump as well with a personal record for Domenici.
In the Pole Vault, Brynn Wandle continued a consistent spring with her 3rd Frontier title in a row including Indoor & Outdoor. For the men, Jackson Barney jumped to a highlight of the day with his 2nd place finish – a personal record that earned him the NAIA B Standard in the event. Tucker Monaco tied for 3rd, and Jake Jamieson vaulted a lifetime best to end just outside the scoring.
The 4x800 Relays both brought excitement to the track in two competitive races. Carroll's women (Ellie Baxter, Faye Holland, Isabelle Ruff, Madalen Shipman) came away with the Conference Championship. The Saints men (Tanner Joyce, Wyatt Ehredt, Oliver Morris, Jack Jensen) placed 2nd to Bismarck State by only 0.02 seconds.
The Saints continue at Biesiot Activities Center in Dickinson, N.D. on Sunday. Field events begin at 10:00 am with running events at noon.
