Pair of Saints Garner CSC Academic All-American Honors

07/16/25 | 2:26 PM

AUSTIN, Texas - College Sports Communicators (CSC) has announced the 2024-25 Academic All-America® Men's and Women's Track & Field teams for NCAA Division I-II-III and NAIA. Two Carroll College standouts earned Second Team Academic All-American honors, Josh Smalley and Madalen Shipman.

Academic All-American is a title reserved for college student-athletes who perform at an elite level in their chosen sport and in the classroom. The all-time list of 40,000+ Academic All-Americans includes major sports stars and some of the world's most accomplished individuals in medicine, business, science and the arts. Established in 1952 and selected by College Sports Communicators (CSC), Academic All-America is the longest running and premier award for athletic and academic success across championship college sports at all NCAA levels, the NAIAtwo-year colleges and Canadian institutions.

Two more Fighting Saints brought home Academic All-American honors this week, bringing Carroll's total to five for the 2024-25 academic year.

Both Josh Smalley (Missoula, Mont. / SR) and Madalen Shipman (Dillon, Mont. / SR) were named Second Team CSC Academic All-Americans this week, a true testament to the pair's dedication in both athletic and academic pursuits.

Smalley capped a tremendous Carroll career with a superb spring effort that saw him earn the Frontier Conference Men's Pole Vault title with a personal record vault of 5.00m (16' 4.75"). He followed up the Frontier crown with an All-American performance at the 2025 NAIA Outdoor Track & Field Championships, earning sixth place with a vault of 4.75m (16' 2.5").

Outside of competition, Smalley is equally as impressive. He was the Men's Track & Field recipient of the Champion of Character honor this season, and is among the highest cumulative GPA's in the entire athletic department. A multi-time Academic All-Conference and NAIA Daktronics Scholar Athlete honoree, Smalley graduated with a Civil Engineering degree while maintaining a highly-impressive 3.94 GPA.

Madalen Shipman was the strongest all-around performer for the Fighting Saints Women's Track team all year long. Competing year round, Shipman was part of the Frontier runner-up Women's Cross Country team in the Fall. With the flip of the calendar year, her attention turned towards shorter distance events, and multiple All-American honors. At the 2025 NAIA Indoor Championships, Shipman was named an All-American with her third place finish in the 600m (1:32.66). She proceeded to follow up the stellar Indoor season with a Frontier Conference Championship in the 1500m (5:02.75), and earned her second All-American honor of the year at the NAIA Outdoor Championships with a fifth place finish in the 800m (2:11.53).

Like Smalley, Shipman is near the top of the academic charts for all Carroll student-athletes, carrying a near-perfect 3.96 GPA as a Business: Management & Marketing major.

The pair join Michal Mojzis, Hunter Peck, and Julia Carr to complete the institution's largest class of Academic All-Americans since 2017.

Carroll was the lone Frontier Conference school with student-athletes from both the Men's and Women's Track & Field teams to earn Academic All-American honors.
