Spokane, Wash. – Saints Track & Field competed in the Whitworth Invite along with athletes from 35 other teams at "The Podium" Indoor Track Facility this weekend.
On Friday evening, two combinations of six women ran in the Distance Medley Relay (DMR) and 4x800m Relay. The DMR missed qualifying for Nationals by 0.06 seconds, and the 4x800 by 0.69 seconds. The 4x800 team is currently ranked 13th Nationally so would have a chance to compete at Nationals if they remain in the Top 16 over the next few weeks. Paige Baxstresser ran a personal record during the DMR 400 leg and London Lambrecht ran a lifetime best during the 4x800. Lambrecht and Natalie Yocum doubled in both relays, and Yocum ran the fastest 800 leg of the day for the Saints.
In individual events Friday and Saturday, there were multiple solid performances. Zach Rector set a personal record in the 5000m. Baxstresser took a step closer to the Indoor National B Standard in the open 400m as did Van Gottwals in the 800m. Both will have another shot at qualifying in the final meet of the season.
"We didn't hit every goal we were aiming for this weekend, but that is certainly a part of competitive athletics," said Distance Coach Shannon Flynn. "I was proud of how the athletes stayed focused on the process and found ways to take steps forward while celebrating the positives," she added.
The full Saints team will compete next Friday February 17 at the Big Sky Tuner in Bozeman, Mont.
