Helena, Mont. – Saints Cross Country will race in their biggest, most competitive meet of the season in Grand Rapids, Mich. on Saturday October 22 at the NAIA Great Lakes Challenge.
Montana Tech, Montana Western, and Rocky Mountain College (women only) will also compete in the meet. About 25 teams will run in the top race of the day – the Maroon Race – as well as about 20 others in the White Race. At least 15 teams for both men and women are either ranked in the Top 25 for NAIA nationally or are receiving votes. Many of those are rated just ahead of or in close proximity to the Saints, who are ranked 19
th for women and are receiving the 29
th most votes for men.
Carroll's men and women both won the Tony Banovich Invitational two weeks ago. The Saints will travel 7 individuals from each of those squads to Michigan. For the men,
Van Gottwals,
Spencer Swaim,
Connor O'Hara,
Zach Rector,
Clayton Ryerson,
James Normandeau, and
Brycen Gardner will race. For the women,
Katelyn McKay,
Reghan Worley,
Natalie Yocum,
Kyle Olson,
Hanna Ziegenhagen,
Erika Arthur, and
Hannah Sempf will compete.
"On one hand this race is a great opportunity for us to make a splash and control our fate for the remainder of the season, but on the other hand we need to just go out and keep doing what we have been all season without adding any extra pressure," Head Coach
Shannon Flynn said. "I'm just really proud of our consistency as far as training hard, growing, and connecting as a group this fall, so I'm excited to see what we can do at sea level in a highly competitive atmosphere."
The men's 8k will begin at 10:00 am Eastern Time at Riverside Park, and the women's 5k will start at 11:00 am Eastern.
