A 6’1” guard from Anaconda Central High, Bill Lowney was a 4-year starter noted mostly for his defensive play. But he could score when need be, evidenced by a 25-point outburst vs. Ricks College in just his sixth collegiate appearance. As a sophomore, he averaged 8.6 points and missed seven games due to a knee injury, but made enough of an impression to earn All-Montana College Conference honorable mention.
He went on to collect a pair of second team selections in 1963 and 1964. His junior year, Bill reached 15-plus points four times and was named the team’s Most Valuable Player. His final season, he tallied 20-or-more points four times, with a career-high 27 counters against St. Martin’s College, and led the Hilltop hoopsters in scoring five times. “Bill Lowney is the quiet man in the corner,” the IR reported, “but he’s the glue that keeps the Saints together, and he’s going to be hard to replace.”
