A graduate of Helena Cathedral High, Big Walt Romasko, at 6’3”, 197 pounds, was a 4-year starter in both football (having not played in high school) and basketball on the Hilltop, while earning five All-Conference selections, two on the gridiron and three in roundball. An end/linebacker/kicker, he established school and conference career grid records for receptions and receiving yards, and was considered one of the best blockers and fiercest tacklers in the league.

As the Saints hoops center, Romasko established at least five CC scoring records: single game points (39 vs. Rocky Mountain), season points (422) and average (17.9 ppg), as well as career points (1217) and average (13.4 ppg). For his career, he scored 20-plus points in 22 games, including a 24-point effort when he netted the winning basket at the buzzer in the 68-66 victory over Gonzaga. And if rebound stats had been kept, Walt might have owned the record for boards, as well.

He was part of seven MCC championships, four on the gridiron and three in basketball. From 1952-54, Carroll’s cagers went 57-11 overall, 27-3 in conference, while claiming the program’s first undefeated league title at 10-0. Romasko also lettered twice in track – totaling 10 monograms – and nearly won the 1953 Conference 440 yard run title before tripping just 10 yards from the finish line.
