A 185-pound speedster from Cut Bank, Steve Smith left the Hilltop with three All-Conference selections and at least 6 school rushing records, and was part of two Frontier championships. As a freshman, he was a reserve running back and defensive end. He moved into the starting lineup in 1975 at running back, rushing for 833 yards and 7 touchdowns, while earning second team All-Frontier. 

The next season, Smith established three Carroll records – longest touchdown run (94 yards), season yards (1163) and carries in a game (42). He also reached the end zone 14 times, ranked third in the nation with an average of 147 yards per game, and was selected first team All-Frontier and All-District 12. He came back to tally 13 scores and gain 1149 yards (6.3 ypc) his senior year, highlighted by a 242-yard, 3 touchdown outburst vs. Ricks College. 

Steve averaged 129.6 yards vs. NAIA opponents (No. 3 in the country), and 143.6 ypg counting the Ricks contest. He also earned 1977 second team All-Conference and All-District, while adding program career rushing records of 3173 yards (5.6 average carry), 34 touchdowns and 206 points scored, to his resume’. Smith’s other notable achievements included three 200-yard and four 3-touchdown games, with five TD runs over 60 yards (94, 83, 78, 74, 61).
