Powell County High standout Shelly Mitchell cracked Carroll Women’s basketball’s starting lineup halfway through her freshman season on the Hilltop in 1977, and remained there for the next 3 and a half seasons. The 5’5” guard concluded her career as the school’s no. 2 all-time scorer with 850 points, averaging 10.9 points per game. She was the Lady Saints first three-time All-Conference selection, making second team from 1978-80.
Her junior year, Mitchell averaged 13.1 points per game. During an early 1978-79 season five-game stretch, she fired in highs of 25, 26 and 24 points. Mitchell became CC’s single-season scoring leader as a senior, tallying 308 points, while pacing the squad in average (10.9 ppg), assists (53) and steals (46). The 1980 Hilltoppers went 19-9 and 9-3 in league play, winning the program’s very first Frontier Conference championship.
