After scoring the winning basket in overtime for Butte Central’s 1950 State prep basketball championship over Helena High, Joe Pat Sullivan attended the College of Great Falls for two years. He then transferred to Carroll in 1952, where he shined as a unique two-sport All-Conference athlete. He started at guard for the Saints’ Conference cage crowns in 1953 and ’54. As a senior, Joe Pat averaged about 9 points per game, attaining double figures six times, with a high of 14 counters in CC’s 91-82 win over Butte’s School of Mines.

Known for his stout defense, he was selected 1956 honorable mention All-Conference. On the gridiron, Sullivan, a solid 190-pounder, served as CC’s starting end for two seasons. His final year, he scored four touchdowns (3 receptions, Pick 6) and made first team All-MCC. His Saints won 4-of-4 possible MCC titles, three of them (2 football, 1 basketball) with undefeated records. He was also the starting left fielder for the 1953 baseball team. From 1960-72, Father Joe Pat Sullivan performed as the Hilltop gridders line coach.
