An Anaconda native, Pat O’Leary was a robust 195-pound lineman for the Saints, playing on both sides of the ball at the tackle position. In 1961, Carroll started out like a house on fire, winning its first four games by a combined score of 81-13, with 2 shutouts. After the 39-0 whitewash over Northern Montana, the IR lauded the outstanding play of Pat and several other teammates. The fifth game was a scoreless tie with Montana Tech.

So at 4-0-1, the defense had posted three shutouts, permitting averages of 2.5 points and 88.2 total yards per game. The lows were against Ricks College at 75 total yards, and 5 first downs by Rocky Mountain. When O’Leary was pictured in the paper, it read: “Defensive standout Pat O’Leary…is one of the reasons the Carroll College defense is so stingy giving up yardage this season.” However, the Saints (4-3-1, 2-1-1) did not win again, but still only gave up 10.2 points per game. O’Leary was selected 1961 second team All-Montana College Conference.
