Peterson, a 6’6” post from Westby, transferred to Carroll from UND-Williston JC his sophomore season. After a year of part-time play, Neil started at post his final two seasons on the Hilltop. In 1976 he was CC’s No. 2 scorer and rebounder, averaging 11.5 points and 7.2 boards. His senior year, he garnered second team All-Conference, as team leader in rebounds and No. 3 in scoring. Peterson joined an elite fraternity, averaging a double-double, at 14.6 ppg and 10.7 boards per game. He also passed for 51 assists.
Carroll (20-8, 10-2) earned the 1977 Frontier championship, beating Northern 80-78 in O.T. – Peterson poured in 26 counters and speared 14 rebounds – in the league semi’s, and Eastern 81-72 in the chipper. It was the first time since 1954 the Saints claimed both football and basketball crowns in the same year. His last two years, Neil led the Saints in scoring a combined 13 contests, netted 20-plus points 9 times, and produced 12 double-double games. He just missed the magical 20/20 plateau in a 25-point, 19-rebound effort vs. Eastern
