A versatile multi-sport athlete from St. Peter’s Catholic Anaconda High, “Dutch” Hunthausen starred in football and basketball on the Hilltop. On the gridiron, he was described as a “quadruple threat signal caller,” a running/passing/defensive halfback, punter/kicker and kick returner. In 1940, Ray ran and passed for touchdowns in the win over Dillon Normal, connected on a 14-yard pass to Jack McCarvel to set-up the winning TD versus Montana Mines, and ran for three scores in the Alumni game.
“Coach (Ed) Simonich’s Ironman, Hunthausen played every minute of every game,” the newspaper reported. “He is the best all-around back the modern Saints have ever had.” Father Hunthausen coached every sport at Carroll from 1953-57, winning a combined seven MCC titles – three football, 1953-54, 1956; two basketball, 1954-55; and one each in baseball and golf in 1954. Raymond Hunthausen went on the serve as the Archbishop of Seattle from 1975-91.
