Mahoney was a 5-11, 190-pound linebacker from Butte Central, where he helped the Maroons win two football Class A state championships. He gridded for the Saints from 1973 to 1976, making three All-Conference second teams. He played with non-stop intensity and enthusiasm, and was voted team captain his senior year.
