A 6’1” guard from Spokane, Mike Kelley was a talented all-around hoopster, highly regarded for his smooth shooting; twisting, spinning lay-ups; excellent ball handling and passing; and tough defensive play. A two-time first team All-Conference selection, he left the Hilltop as the program’s fourth leading scorer. Mike made the starting lineup mid-way through his frosh season and earned honorable mention All-Frontier.

He led the team in scoring both of the next two seasons, with averages of 15.5 and 15.2 ppg, for a combined total of 26 times (52%) being CC’s high-point man. In 1979, he was the only sophomore chosen for the All-District team. As a junior, he also paced the team in assists (3.7 average), and field goal (52%) and free throw (80%) accuracy,  while garnering his second All-Conference first team citation.

His final season, Kelley was the team’s No. 2 scorer at 12.2 ppg. He finished his career with 1274 points (13.1 ppg), which included 19 20-plus point games, with a PR of 30 vs. Rocky Mountain. His versatility was on display in a win over Northern, posting 20 points, 5 assists, 5 steals and 3 blocked shots. Off the court, Mike Kelley was Carroll’s senior class president and a Rhodes Scholar finalist.
