A 6’2” forward/guard from North Lake, Illinois, Louie Durante spent his first season at Carroll with the freshman basketballers, and led the team in scoring, averaging 21 points per game. Among the highlights was an 86-74 win over the UM’s junior varsity Cubs. Durante moved up to the varsity the next season as a starting guard. He was the Saints’ No. 2 scorer at 10.9 ppg, and did not miss a start his last 3 years on the Hilltop. In 1972, he was the top scorer 12 times and scored 20-plus points in 10 games, with highs of 34 (Montana Tech) and 31 points.

During a midseason 5-game stretch, he averaged 23 points. Louie finished as the squad’s leading scorer and No. 7 in the Frontier, at 17.5 ppg, and despite also spearing 4 rebounds per game and being one of the best defenders in the league, was only selected as honorable mention All-Conference. His scoring dropped off significantly his final season – when the Saints brought in several high scoring big men – but Louis Durante responded with even better defensive and passing skill sets.
