Helena High basketball standout Larry Scheewe, had never played football before arriving on the Hilltop’s campus. But he went on to become a 4-year letterman and a 3-year starter for the Saints, as a 168-lb. halfback/linebacker. His senior year in the 1931 season finale – a 6-0 victory over the Montana State Bobcats to clinch the Montana College Conference championship and an undefeated (6-0-0), untied, unscored upon season – he was lauded by the Helena Daily Independent.
“Throughout the game, the brilliant work of Chick Garner and Larry Scheewe stood out strongly,” the paper reported, “they were the stars of the contest.” According to his 1985 HOF induction article, he was selected All-State by the newspaper, and A.P. second team All-MCC. He also played three years of hoops with the Hilltoppers, leading the team in scoring in five games, with highs of 21 and 18 points.
