After the Mount Saints Charles football team went a paltry 1-4-1 in 1930, the Saints went from worst-to-first the next year, under new coach Bill Jones of Notre Dame fame. And not just “first”…they achieved one of the greatest seasons in school history. Jones’ gridders posted an undefeated, untied and unscored upon 6-0-0 record, which included wins over the University of Montana and Montana State, while outscoring the opposition 192-0.
The next year newly named Carroll College slipped to 3-2, before football was suspended on the Hilltop from 1933-37. Jones had played for the Fighting Irish in 1926-27, and served as an assistant coach under Knute Rockne, when Notre Dame captured back-to-back national championships in 1929-30. He went on to become the Chief U.S. District Judge for the District of Columbia. It took another 42 years (1973) before CC went undefeated and untied again.
