John Romasko had played basketball at Helena Cathedral High, but since the school did not have football, his appearance on Carroll’s practice field in the fall off 1952 was his first organized grid experience since the Grade School Three R League. A 160 pound center/defensive tackle for the Saints, he was one of the smaller lineman in the Montana College Conference. But what John lacked in size he made up for in determination and technique.
Romasko – whose weight training consisted of “unloading freight cars and trucks” of 100-pound bags of sugar and flour – started both ways his last three seasons, while earning All-MCC selections at center each year. He made first team as a junior, and second team in 1953 and ’55. John later served as the school’s Helena alumni chairman and was a member of CC’s Athletic Hall of Fame committee.
