From 2000-03, Joelle Laffey, one of the “Founding Mothers” of Carroll soccer, amassed school records of 74 goals and 161 points. Both records still stand, 10 years later.
As a senior, she led the 2003 Saints to their first appearance in the Northwest Regional Tournament.
She also ranks 1-2 in Carroll’s record books for most season goals, at 24 (2003) and 23 (2000).
Her freshman year, Laffey helped the Saints (13-6), to the school’s first trophy in the sport, when Carroll placed runner-up at Washington’s Evergreen State Tournament.
Laffey achieved the first of her many hat tricks in a 3-2 win over the Lethbridge Pronghorns that year. She produced four goals in a game twice, in a 12-0 win over the Oregon Institute of Technology and a 7-0 win over Rocky Mountain College.
Laffey, who was twice named the Pacific Northwest Region’s player of the week, wound up with 23 goals.
As a senior, Laffey led the Saints (11-5) to an appearance in the Northwest tournament. She hammered home 24 goals on the year, while earning two more regional Player of the Week honors.
She tallied four goals twice, versus Northwest Nazarene (4-1) and Mary (5-1); and three goals against Oregon Tech (8-1).
Laffey’s 74 lifetime goals are 27 more Valerie Feltz’s 47, which rank No. 2 on the school list. And her 161 points are 49 more than Feltz’s second-place total of 112.
“Joelle was one of the best players I ever coached,” said Jim Dushin, who coached Laffey her first three seasons with the Saints. “She had the uncanny ability to be in the right place at the right time to receive a cross pass.”
He said the main reasons for her greatness was being able to get separation because “her first couple steps were so quick,” and that she “put almost everything on goal; she was hardly ever wide or high.”
