Joe Sullivan was a 5’8” 170-lb. defensive back from Kalispell, where he helped the Flathead Braves to the 1970 State grid championship. A three-year starter at free safety for Carroll, Sullivan earned second team All-Frontier as a junior, and first team his final season. In 1973, in the win over Minot State, he ranked fourth on the Saints defensive charts with 35 points. In the season finale, Joe intercepted a pair of passes in the victory over Western Montana, to complete an unbeaten season (7-0) for the Hilltoppers’ first undefeated, untied campaign since 1931.

As a senior co-captain, he pirated an interception during the 26-6 triumph over Rocky Mountain, as the defense limited the Bears to just 71 total yards and 6 first downs. Sullivan tied for fourth on the team’s year-end stats with 36 tackle assists, while finishing with 51 total tackles. He returned to Carroll in 1982 as an assistant coach, serving three years as the squad’s defensive coordinator.
