East Helena native Joe Maierle played left tackle on Mount Saint Charles Preparatory Academy’s football team, where he served as Captain of the Junior Saints. Joe went on to start for four years at right guard at the next level on The Hilltop, garnering at least two All-Conference selections. During his college career, the Saints went 20-10-2, out-scoring their opposition by an average of 29-7, with 13 shutouts. MSC won two conference championships, in 1927-28.
The 1927 Saints (5-2-1) defeated Gonzaga 21-0, while the 1928 edition went 7-1, highlighted by wins over Montana State (20-0) and North Dakota (20-12). The local newspaper described Maierle as “an all-star lineman who always played a strong, consistent game and could be counted on for an outstanding effort at both offense and defense.”
