Joe Horne was a 5-foot-9, 175-pound linebacker for Carroll from 1998-2001. An intense, non-stop competitor, he became a two-time All-American and the Saints’ all-time leading tackler.
Horne played for coach Bob Petrino as a freshman, and Mike Van Diest his last three seasons.
His junior and senior years, Carroll qualified for back-to-back appearances in the NAIA playoff semifinals.
In 2000, Horne compiled four sacks and five fumble recoveries, and a school-record 146 tackles. In the quarterfinal win over Huron, he was named the defensive MVP.
As a senior, Horne posted 109 tackles and 4.5 sacks. He received his third successive first team All-Conference selection and was tabbed the 2001 Frontier Defensive Player of the Year.
He finished with a career record of 428 total tackles.
Coach Mike Van Diest told the IR in 2001, “Joe is the type of player that as coaches, we sometimes get once in a lifetime. It’s fun to watch him play.”
