An All-State running back from Anaconda Central, Jim McMahon was known as “Mr. Outside” due to his breakaway speed, while his back field mate Jim Longin was “Mr. Inside.” Jim got the most out of his 150-pound frame, becoming a rare 3-time All-Conference selection for the Hilltoppers – a second teamer as a sophomore and junior, and first team his final season.
In 1961, he led the squad in rushing (404 yards), pass receiving (10 catches for 332 yards), touchdown receptions (three, longs of 71 and 53 yards) and total yards (736). As a junior, McMahon was the Saints no. 2 ground-gainer, compiling 321 yards. He reached pay-dirt four times, highlighted by a scintillating 62 yard dash to The House against Northern, and a pair of scores vs. Tech. In 1963, McMahon paced the Saints with 373 yards rushing and was no. 2 averaging 5.4 yards-per-carry, while garnering Carroll’s “Best Back” award.
