A Helena Cathedral High graduate, Jerry Mitchke was the junior center on the Greenies’ 1958 District Class B football championship team. A four-year starter on the line at Carroll, as a 180-pound sophomore he was selected 1961 second team All-Montana College Conference center. Jerry was mentioned as one of the “key” defenders after the 39-0 shutout over Northern Montana, when the Saints defense allowed the Lights just 98 total yards.
His final season, as senior co-captain, he was one of only three gridders to play both ways fulltime, and was listed as “one-fourth of the backbone” of the Hilltopper’s defense. He garnered his second post-season award, being named a 1963 honorable mention All-Conference guard. Mitchke was named to the Who’s Who Among Students of American Universities, and later served as president of Carroll’s Alumni Association.
