Prior to his college years, Jack Daniels prepped at Anaconda’s Saint Peter’s Central High, where he helped the Saints capture the 1937 District 16 basketball championship over Whitehall. He played two seasons of football for Carroll before the sport was suspended in 1942 during World War II. On the Hilltop, Daniels was an outstanding punter and place-kicker, and was known for his “roughness” on offense and defense from the tackle position.
In 1940, he bucked over from the 1-yard line for the winning TD in the 13-6 victory over Whitworth. The next year, he booted field goals in both wins over Whitworth and Dillon, for 23- and 25-yards, respectively. Moved to the backfield against Tech, Daniels tossed a 13-yard scoring strike to Jack Peters for a 6-0 victory. In addition to his play on the Hilltop that season, every weekend he commuted between Helena and Anaconda to grid for the Anodes in their adult city league.
