As a freshman forward from North Dakota in 1942-43, “Hank” Ballantyne was among the top scorers for coach Ed Simonich’s Montana Conference champions. The Saints went 9-3, losing those three games by a combined total of just five points. Ballantyne then enlisted in the U.S. Navy, returning after WWII to play three more seasons on the Hilltop. Carroll finished as MCC runners-up in both 1948 and 1949, with Hank making All-Conference each year. He was the squad’s no. 2 scorer his final season, at 208 points (10.5 ppg). Arguably Ballantyne’s best game occurred in a 73-66 victory over Eastern, firing in a career-high 23 points.
