Carroll College Athletics

Hank Burgess boxed in Carroll’s very first “Smoker” in 1948, fighting Butte’s Henry Klein to a draw. He also helped the Red Devils to three championships in the Hilltoppers’ intramural basketball league.

Burgess later was instrumental in bringing the Smokers back to Carroll, in the late 1950s. Over the next 20-plus years, he worked tirelessly coaching the boxers, while helping organize the annual event.
