Frank Bedner, a Tyndal, South Dakota, native, had been an All-State tackle at Trinity College in Sioux City, Iowa. He was headed to Notre Dame until being recruited by Mount Saint Charles coach (and Fighting Irish alum) Wilbur Eaton. Nicknamed “Pops” at the advanced age of 26, he was a two-time All-Conference selection on the Hilltop, in 1927-28.
The Saints went a combined 12-3-2 during that period highlighted by wins over Montana State 19-0, Gonzaga 21-0, Chadron State 13-6, Montana Normal (Western) 153-0, and a 6-6 tie versus Washington State. The paper noted that “One of the most ferocious players on the field, 169-pound Frank Bedner has established a wonderful record with the Saints. When he hits a man, they stay hit.” Bedner later turned down an offer to play for the Chicago Bears.
