John Ward, who hailed from Bozeman, played football and ran track for the Saints. One of Carroll’s early day track super stars, Ward won six Montana College Conference T&F gold medals his first three seasons; three 1-mile championships, two 880-yard titles and one 440 crown. As a junior, he set conference records in both his victories, running the half-mile in 2:02.7, and the mile with a 4:44.5 clocking.
All-told, John amassed 10 MCC track medals, adding an 880 runner-up, and three mile relays (2nd, 3rd, 4th). Carroll finished in the top-4 each year, with a trio of third-place trophies, in 1951-52 and 1954. Ward also played football every year, although he didn’t letter until his senior season. A 156-lb. reserve halfback, he scored his only TD in the final game of his career, a 13-yard run vs. Eastern in the 1953 season finale.
