An All-State center for the 1951 Class C runner-up Helena Cathedral High cagers, Hal Hunter was one of Carroll’s most prolific scorers. A rare 4-year starter on four consecutive Montana College Conference championship teams, in addition to his consistent scoring – his yearly averages consisted of 13.3, 13.7, 14.0 and 17.9 points per game – at 6’4” Hunter’s attributes also included aggressive rebounding and tough defense. As a freshman, he set the Saints’ single game record of 33 points against Great Falls’ College of Education.
Over the course of his career, “Huge Hal” led the Saints in scoring 31 times, and produced 20-plus points in 24 games. 12 times he poured in 25 or more points, with four 30-plus games. His senior year, Hunter paced Carroll’s scoring column in 14 games, leading the way in 2/3rds of its contests. His final eight games, he averaged 22.1 ppg and wrapped up the 1954-55 season with 394 points, while garnering his second successive first team All-MCC selection. Hal Hunter left the Hilltop ranked No. 2 all-time in both season and career scoring.
