Butte Central product Gene Davis was the first Carroll gridder selected first or second team All-Conference his first three years (second-first-second teams). A 6’0”, 165-lb. quarterback/kicker, as a sophomore, he led the league in passing, with 23 completions for 607 yards and 5 touchdown strikes. His TD passes totaled 287 yards (57.4 average), with a long of 71 and the shortest at 43. His final two seasons Gene posted 26 completions/413 yards and 34/560, for a 3-year total of 83 completions and 1580 yards.
Evans finished with 18 career touchdowns (12 passing, 5 rushing, 1 reception), 13 PAT kicks and 2 field goals. Oddly, he was not selected All-Conference his senior year. The November 1963 IR noted, “There is no other team in the state with a Rhodes Scholarship nominee (Gene Evans) playing quarterback.” He also lettered 4 years in basketball, for a combined 8 monograms. Evans served as a part-time starter his first two seasons, averaging about 5½-points per game, with a career PR of 20 counters in the 77-70 win over Western in the 1961 Anaconda Holiday Tournament chipper.
