When Helena Cathedral product Dean Roberts arrived on Carroll’s campus in the fall of 1963, he barely weighed 100 pounds. But he was athletic, he was a hard worker, and he was fast. After a significant growth spurt and starting at end as a sophomore, Roberts was moved farther away from the line to take advantage of his speed, thus becoming one of the Hilltoppers’ first “split end” wide receivers.
Known as a “Big play man,” by career’s end Dean totaled six career touchdown receptions, five of which went for 42 yards or longer.
Among his best games were a pair of TD catches against Western, for 42 and 53 yards; a 62-yard scoring grab and a fumble recovery versus Northern; returning a blocked field goal 75-yards to The House against Montana Tech; and 14 tackles at defensive end vs. Eastern. A 5’9” 160-lb. senior co-captain, Roberts was named the team’s Outstanding Lineman, while repeating as a first team All-MCC selectee.
