A Pocatello, Idaho prepster and Utah State transfer, fullback/punter Dave Romasko was the first Saint to attain three 1000-yard rushing seasons. At 6’3” and 230-lbs., with 4.6-second 40-yard speed and a 320-pound bench press, one local sports writer described Romasko’s running style as “4 yards and a cloud of bodies.” A 3-time first team All-Conference and All-District selection, he earned back-to-back Frontier MVP awards in 1985-86, and was named All-American his final year.
He rushed for 1150 yards in 1984 – with a high of 212 vs. Western Montana – when his 127-yards per game average ranked No. 7 in the nation. As a junior, Dave posted a trio of three-touchdown contests, with longs of 63 and 52 yards, and highs of 187 and 186 yards. In 1986, he added his fourth three-TD game, and then galloped to The House a career-high four times against Western. Romasko’s averages of 12.75 points and 136.25 yards per game rated No. 2 and No. 6, respectively, in the country.
He was selected 1986 second team NAIA All-American and honorable mention A.P. Little All-American. Dave left the school with eight Hilltop rushing records, consisting of season (1236) and career (3460) yards, season (18) and career (36) touchdowns, and season (108) and career (218) points. Romasko – whose father Walt and uncle John were both CC Hall of Famers – played for the Cincinnati Bengals (starting three games at tight end) during the 1987 NFL strike year, sandwiched between free agent tryouts with the Chicago Bears and New York Jets.
