Helena Central High distance ace Dave Roberts established Carroll track records in all three distance races during his two seasons with the program. As a Saints’ freshman, at the 1969 Harry Adams Relays in Missoula, he set the school marks in the mile (4:35.2) and 2-mile (9:59.6) runs. At Vigilante Stadium, in the Hilltop’s first home track meet in years, Dave captured the 2-mile while lowering the record to 9:55.4.
When the Saints placed fifth at the Conference Championships, he won the 3-mile by 75-yards over the defending champion – despite not being informed that “the event had been moved forward by 2 hours” – in 15:11.8, using “mainly old fashioned intestinal fortitude,” according to the IR. He also placed runner-up in the mile at 4:26. Both were new CC records. In 1970, Roberts successfully defended his 3-mile crown and placed third in the mile.
