John Frankino was a member of Butte Central’s 1950 State basketball championship, when the Maroons beat Helena High’s “Swish Kids” in the chipper. In 1956, the 23-year old Frankino directed his alma mater to another title, becoming the state’s youngest coach to win a prep hoops title. A math professor at Carroll in the 1960s, he served as head basketball coach for four seasons, from 1960-63, and 1966-67.
His blue-and-gold cagers placed as Montana College Conference runners-up twice, before winning the program’s second-ever undefeated (10-0) league crown in 1966. Frankino posted a college career mark of 62-32, 30-10 in conference, including a school-record 15 game win streak. John also held stints as Carroll A.D., MCC president and NAIA District 5 chairman, at various times during the decade.
