A two way gridder from Denver, Colorado, at quarterback and defensive back, Arnold served mostly part-time until his junior year, before rounding out his college career as a standout starter. 1954 was his best campaign, sparking the Saints to their fifth straight undefeated Conference championship. Among his best games were the 39-13 win over Western, firing a pair of touchdown passes (for 35 and 60 yards); and the 53-6 victory over Montana Mines, when the paper reported “Claude Arnold performed a masterful job of running the offense.”
He tossed four TD strikes on the year, averaging 40 yards per score. Claude helped the Hilltoppers shine on both sides of the ball, as they outscored their league opponents an average of 39-6. His final season, Carroll ran its win streak to 24 straight against MCC opponents before losing to Rocky, and finishing Conference runners-up. An individual highlight was his 77 yard jaunt to pay-dirt in the win over NWCC. Arnold wound up with 10 total career TDs – 6 passing and 4 rushing.
