Cathy “Wally” Wallace, from Bay Village, Ohio, transferred to Carroll from the University of Utah her sophomore year, and was instrumental in the Lady Saints’ first conference championship in 1980. Wallace exhibited such outstanding leadership skills she was named co-captain her final two years. As a junior, she led the team with 63 assists (playing in only 18 of 24 games), pirated 45 steals and scored 6 points per game.
Known mainly for her deft ball-handling, accurate passing (she was Carroll’s assist leader each campaign), quickness and defensive play, Cathy was also an effective rebounder. And near the close of her career, she proved she could shoot a little bit, too. In her final 11 games, she scored double digits 8 times, while averaging 12.8 points and raising her average 3-points, to 10.2 ppg and finishing as the team’s No. 2 scorer.
During that streak Wallace poured in a PR 22 counters vs. CGF, and in a win over Northern, she canned 19 points and speared 13 boards (8 offensive). Not bad for a 5’8” guard. She was selected 1982 second team All-Conference. Wally’s 11 steals in a game (twice) still stand as a CC record. Six weeks after graduation, she was killed in an automobile accident. The Cathy Wallace Award was presented from 1983-95, to the Lady Saint who made “the greatest effort to help her teammates.”
