Although he was a better football player, Bob Robinson had also been one of Helena Cathedral High basketball’s top scorers and rebounders as the Greenies’ center. He was recruited by Montana State grid coach Jim Sweeney, but chose Carroll in large part due to the efforts of Father Joe Pat Sullivan who was the assistant football coach. Big, strong, quick, and athletic, the versatile Robinson started all four years on the Hilltop, and went on to play six different positions for the Saint gridders; both ways on the line at guard and tackle, fullback, linebacker and special teams.
His frosh season, Bob established a CC record with four fumble recoveries in one game, and later set the school mark with three fumble recovery touchdowns. As a junior, he was selected a 1967 first team All-Conference offensive guard, while capturing Carroll’s “Golden Helmet” Award. In 1968, the powerful 6’2”, 225-pound senior made first team All-Frontier at defensive tackle for the Saints, and was chosen to the 1969 “Who’s Who in American Colleges & Universities.”
