Butte High product Bob Peterson was Carroll’s first 4-time, first team All-Conference gridder. An unstoppable tackling dynamo at 5’9” and 200-lbs., he ran the 40 in 4.9 seconds and bench pressed 385 pounds. Bob led the team in tackles every year and left the Hilltop with at least eight school defensive records. As a freshman, he posted 16 tackles (8 first hits, 8 assists) and a sack in the 27-7 win over Western. Peterson paced CC’s year-end stats with 92 total tackles, 39 solos (tie) and 53 assisted tackles.
In 1974, during a loss to Westminster, he achieved a team-high 118 defensive points, with 20 tackles (9 first hits, 11 assists), a sack, a hurry and a superior PR block. Bob also served as the team’s punter, and finished atop the leaderboard with 675 defensive pts., 56 first hits, a team record 72 assists and 128 total tackles. His junior season, in a 28-18 win over Eastern, he was high with 23 total tackles (13 first hits, 10 assists). He led the squad’s final numbers with 649 points, 67 first hits, 55 assists, 132 total tackles (Carroll record) and 5 fumble recoveries.
Peterson also garnered the first of his two All-District 12 selections. As a senior playing with a bad knee most of the 1977 season, he still managed to top the team with 733 defensive points, 93 first hits (both school standards), 125 total tackles and 32 assists. His staggering lifetime numbers – Saint records all – consisted of 2507 defensive points, 255 first hits, 212 assists and 467 total tackles. Peterson capped off the season with his fourth, first team All-Frontier citation.
